Dr Katz Flavour Point Diet

Some of us are honorable members of the human species who believe in suppressing our desires and practicing the principle of one man/woman at a time, but can we do the same when it comes to satisfying our palates? Our taste buds would rebel against such monotonous eating because we’ve curtailed the pleasure of this very basic human activity to only one flavor a day.

One flavor a day – that’s a tall order!

But Dr. David Katz, an obesity researcher at Yale University, insists that the Flavor Point Diet, which he developed, is the answer to our volatile affair with weight loss.

And if it was researched and conceived at Yale, then it must be sound and credible. Who is going to argue and defy the Yale professor? People who tried the Flavor Point diet confirmed that they lost the excess pounds they wanted to eliminate. Dr. Katz says that anyone on this diet can expect to lose 16 pounds in six weeks.

Essentials of the Flavor Point Diet – let’s review some of the components of the Flavor Point diet.

Dieters stay with one flavor a day. Monday can be mushroom day, Tuesday is chocolate day, Wednesday is walnut day, Thursday is apple day, and so on.

Too many flavors over stimulate the hypothalamus – this is the part of the brain that regulates appetite. A myriad of flavors tells the hypothalamus to “eat more” while only one flavor says “stop, I’ve had enough.”

The diet rests on the principle of “sensory specific satiety.” This means that after tasting too much of one flavor for a day, the dieter develops flavor fatigue and stops eating.

The diet recommends NOT mixing sugar and salt and minimizing the number of ingredients. The more ingredients there are, the more flavors are bound to come out. Hence, the logical consequence is to eat more because of the enjoyment derived from these flavors, leading to inevitable weight gain.

The Flavor Point Diet must be supplemented by 30 minutes of moderate exercise most days of the week and at least six glasses of water a day.

Benefits of the Flavor Point Diet – one benefit that stands out in Dr. Katz’s diet is that individuals can stop worrying about measuring carbohydrates and counting calories. Diets that focus on calories, fat, “high on this” and “low on that” ultimately fail. The Flavor Point Diet is anchored on healthy eating. By incorporating the kinds of foods recommended by Dr. Katz into our eating habits, we promote healthy eating in tiny steps until it becomes ingrained in us.

Another benefit is that since we concentrate on one flavor at a time, we put less pressure on our digestive system. By dealing with one class of foods having the same flavor, it is easier on the digestion. It does not have to try to recognize who’s coming down the esophagus.

An additional benefit is the principle of “sensory specific satiety” as we mentioned earlier. By taking in the same flavor at breakfast, lunch, dinner and snack time, our brain will eventually ask us to stop because it has had enough of the same thing. Since we don’t deviate from the flavor of the day, we get tired of the same flavor as the day stretches on, prompting us to consume less.

Introducing this brand of monogamy into our daily eating may seem like a huge effort, but it’s certainly worth a try. The Flavor Point Diet is no hocus-pocus, it’s just sheer common sense.
